l3/26/2011] Preview: It's "Horns ahoy!" in Handel's horn-happy "Water Music" (continued)

>

A horn -- of the natural variety

In tonight's horn-happy excerpts we hear two recordings we haven't heard before, but again one by a standard modern symphony orchestra and one in more period-authentic instrumentation (and, you'll notice, at slightly lower pitch):
* Linde-Consort, Hans-Martin Linde, dir. EMI, recorded Oct. 12-15, 1983
* Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam), Eduard van Beinum, cond. Philips, recorded c1958

HANDEL: Water Music:
No. 3. Allegro-Andante-Allegro

Linde-Consort, Hans-Martin Linde, dir.
Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam), Eduard van Beinum, cond.

No. 4, A tempo di minuetto

Linde-Consort, Hans-Martin Linde, dir.
Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam), Eduard van Beinum, cond.

No. 6, Minuet

Linde-Consort, Hans-Martin Linde, dir.
Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam), Eduard van Beinum, cond.

No. 10, Allegro

Linde-Consort, Hans-Martin Linde, dir.
Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam), Eduard van Beinum, cond.

PREVIEW BONUS: ONE LAST TIME
THROUGH THE ROYAL FIREWORKS MUSIC

Of course horns, though rarely spotlighted the way they would be in the Water Music, had played their part in the wind ensemble of Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks, so I thought one last traversal of that might be in order tonight, and since we've been hearing the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Water Music, why not hear it under van Beinum's eventual successor as music director, Bernard Haitink?

HANDEL: Music for the Royal Fireworks

i. Ouverture
ii. Bourrée: Allegro
iii. La Paix (Peace)
iv. La Réjouissance (Rejoicing): Allegro
v. Menuet I and II: Andante

Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Haitink, cond. Philips, recorded c1962
